Fall Hikes in Richmond

Our real estate agents are always ready to welcome autumn back to Central Virginia. With brilliant fall colors and a fresh crispness in the morning air, it's the perfect season to head outside for a hike. If you're looking for a place to hit the trail in the Richmond area, lace up your boots and check out one of these scenic fall hikes.

  • Forest Hill Park - 4021 Forest Hill Ave, Richmond, VA 23225
One of Richmond's most beautiful parks, 105-acre Forest Hill Park, overlooks the south side of the James River, not far from the city center. In addition to developed facilities like pickleball courts and the historic Stone House, the park includes a trail system spanning several miles that loops through woodlands, wetlands, and meadows. A short drive from many Richmond homes for sale, Forest Hill Park is truly mesmerizing in fall, and some of the best scenery is along the 3.2-mile Forest Hills Loop Trail.

  • Legends Park - 1614 Defense Rd, Petersburg, VA 23805
Petersburg's Legends Park is one of the wildest places to go for a fall foliage hike in the Richmond area. Located 30 minutes from Downtown Richmond and a stone's throw from these Petersburg homes for sale, the park spans 330 acres, of which 312 are completely undeveloped except for a series of trails that meander beneath the forest canopy. Several of these trails, like the 0.7-mile Red Trail and the 0.6-mile Blue Trail, offer views of Wilcox Lake as well. Several trailheads within Legends Park are accessible along Baylors Lane.

  • James River Park Pony Pasture - 7300 Riverside Dr, Richmond, VA 23225
One of several interconnected green spaces that make up the James River Park System, Pony Pasture is a lovely 65-acre park overlooking the river. Once used as grazing land for local farmers' horses and ponies up until the 1970s, this park is home to a maze of hiking trails that provide splendid scenery in fall. There's also ample river access here, making it a great spot to do some fall fishing or kayaking. Pony Pasture is a popular area, so plan your visit on a weekday if you can, and get there early to beat the crowds.

  • Leakes Mill Park - 3951 River Rd W, Goochland, VA 23063
You'll find some great kid-friendly hiking trails at Leakes Mill Park, making it an ideal spot for a family nature walk this fall. Located near these Goochland homes for sale, 176-acre Leakes Mill Park is home to athletic fields and facilities, as well as 9 miles of multi-use trails that crisscross the more wooded areas within the park. Starting at the playground, the trail leads to some unique historical ruins and several stream crossings. Keep an eye out for wildlife, including white-tailed deer and various songbird species that stop over on their fall migration.

  • Dutch Gap Conservation Area - 341 Henricus Park Rd, Chester, VA 23836
Surrounding a huge area of wetlands alongside the James River south of Richmond, Dutch Gap Conservation Area is a haven for wildlife and a beautiful place for a fall hike. A 4.5-mile loop utilizes a series of trails and boardwalks to lead hikers through the marsh, with park benches and docks along the way where you can stop and admire the view. Look for birds like cormorants and terns in the bald cypress trees alongside the boardwalks.
